Notker the Poet
Sequences, Tropes and Gregorian Chant from the Monastery of St. Gall
In the 9th century, the monastery of St. Gall, together with the island monastery of Reichenau, formed one of the most important centers of Carolingian culture.
Together with the foundation of St. Pirmin on the Reichenau, the monastery of St. Gall was called the "Educator of Alemannia".
The program also traces oral traditions that lived outside the official liturgy, such as the instrumental performance of melodic models for sequences.
Angilbert's moving Planctus about the Battle of Fontaneto and the Old High German Song of Louis about King Louis III's victory over the Normans at the Battle of Saucourt (881) reflect the constant threat to the monastery from the Normans and Hungarians.
Ordo Virtutum presents in this program masterpieces of the famous poet-musicians of that time in the Gallus Monastery: The monks Notker Balbulus and Tuotilo, who were creative in the genres of sequence and tropus, respectively.
